The Agricultural Cooperative Il Forteto was founded in 1977 by a group of young students, workers and teachers who through a radical change in their way of life tried to live together on a basis of equality where the values of every person can emerge and be realized.

The members of the cooperative have worked on the transformation of sheep and cows' milk. Initially the quantity was limited but then with the growth of the firm and profession, the cheese production became the main activity.



To these agricultural activities we can add fruit-growing (mainly apple trees ) and the production of hay and grain for the breeding of cattle ( for beef ) and saddle horses.

The breeds we raise are typically Tuscan. We have 100 Chianina cows and 100 calves every year to produce beef for the “Bistecca alla Fiorentina”.

We use the thoroughbred Maremma horses to bear ponies to sell later as saddle horses or for horse shows.

THE ZOOTECHNICAL CENTRE

At the zootechnical centre you can find structures meant for working with horses and cowsheds for the cows where about 240 purebred Chianina cows are raised. Both can be visited everyday.

This very old breed with a porcelain white coat, known as “the giant” of the cattle ( the bulls grow up to a weight of 1700 kilos ), rear on our farmland for a great part of the year where we can frequently meet during a horse ride.
